What to Expect
Whether you're visiting church for the first time, returning after many years, or looking for a church home, you are warmly welcome at Bethel and New Castle United Methodist Churches.
Come just as you are. You'll find a friendly congregation, traditional worship rooted in Scripture, prayer, and the singing of beloved hymns. Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month. The Communion Table is an Open Table, and all are invited to participate in the Sacraments. Pastor Adam typically wears a clergy robe and stole as part of leading worship, reflecting the rich traditions of the Church, while proclaiming the timeless message of God's grace.
You don't need to know all the words, customs, or responses to participate. Simply come, worship, and be yourself. Families, children, longtime church members, and first-time guests all have a place here.

Meet Pastor Adam
The Rev. Dr. J. Adam Sowder is honored to serve as Lead Pastor of the New Castle Charge, which includes Bethel United Methodist Church and New Castle United Methodist Church. He is blessed by the opportunity to serve the people of Craig County, Virginia.
Adam and his wife, Sandy, are blessed to call Craig County home, where they steward Highclere Hall, a historic farm estate and place of hospitality. Together they enjoy caring for the land, welcoming guests, and investing in the life of the community. They have three children—Samantha, Teddy, and Henry—and know firsthand both the joys and challenges of family life.
An ordained elder in The United Methodist Church, Adam holds a Doctor of Ministry in Transformational Leadership, including doctoral study in Cambridge, England. Throughout his ministry, he has enjoyed preaching, teaching, pastoral care, mentoring leaders, and finding creative ways to help churches connect with their communities through personal relationships and thoughtful digital ministry.
Adam believes the local church is at its best when it is rooted in Christ, welcoming to all, and actively serving its neighbors. Whether you've been part of the church for decades, are returning after time away, or are simply curious about faith, he looks forward to meeting you, getting to know your story, and welcoming you to worship.
